About me as an artist
I began my artistic journey as a child and teen, practicing portrait drawing in pencil. While in college, I studied anatomy, biology and dance until I became pregnant with my first child. Shortly after my daughter turned 2, I began to dabble in art again, continuing to work on my skills drawing people. A small private art school in my town offered a chance to expand my knowledge using color and painting pastel portraits. During this time I also discovered the book “The Artist’s Way” by Julia Cameron. I can truly say this book changed my life. It was during my pastel class and while reading Ms. Cameron’s book that inspired me to really commit myself to developing and claiming myself as an artist. I decided to paint on a regular basis, discovering and learning as much as I could so I could be the portrait painter I wanted to be. Over the course of the next several years, I painted over 300 portraits of people and animals for hire, donation and personal pleasure.
Since 1996 I have also been teaching what I have learned and practiced art techniques in painting, drawing and clay sculpture to students from ages 3 and up through adulthood.
I have traveled to home, businesses and schools to teach people privately as well as owning an art school and gallery in Cary from 2001-2004. After 2004, I also began to teach art to students with disabilities, working with mild to severe to profoundly physically and cognitively affected individuals. Many of my students have shown their work and won awards and recognition for their talents. All of my students have taught me much about what it means to be an artist and teacher and I find my experience with all of them to be very rewarding and for that I am extremely grateful.
Currently, my work is focused on bringing the soul and life of my subject matter onto canvas or paper. This has become increasingly important to me because I have also begun to develop and practice my intuitive capabilities, which have been quietly operating under then surface since childhood. Those capabilities now ask to be brought out into the light and to be expressed as paintings, drawings and as intuitive readings for people. This melding of skills has been a lifesaver for me. Both sides have been asking for an avenue for expression within me for years and I am grateful to have finally begun to blend them in my work and bring them out in to the open.
